About Me

All my life I have loved reading books and watching movies, which is what motivated me to try my hand at writing both since the late 1980s.

Mid-September 2004 I experienced a life-changing event. It was a Wednesday: my parents took me suit-shopping and then for coffee at Starbucks. I was at a high point in my life. I had been providing regular Business Commentary on CBC Radio for just over a year and had earned a twice-weekly syndicated column across the CBC Radio network. At George Brown College I had recently received the prestigious Golden Apple teaching award, and that summer I officially became a CFA Charterholder after passing all three exams on my first attempt. It was the best afternoon I could remember spending with my parents since childhood.

Two days later my father called with horrible news: my mother had died suddenly earlier that day from a brain aneurysm. It drove home how fleeting life really is.

Additional Screenplays (available for collaboration)

  • Moments — a romantic comedy that, to this day, I believe has huge commercial potential.
  • The Hordes — an action-adventure written as a sequel to Head-On (the original Head-On script has been lost).
  • No Innocents — an homage to Jackie Chan–style movies like Rumble in the Bronx; call it a comedy-adventure.
  • Longshot — a romantic comedy about a middle-aged man who finally figures it out.

My Top-Ten Movies of All Time

These aren’t necessarily the greatest films ever made. Two criteria put them on my list: (1) if I could watch only ten movies for the rest of my life, these would be the ones; (2) each contains an important teaching.

  1. The Road Warrior — IMDb
A moral man can live honourably in an amoral world by keeping his word.
  2. Top Gun & Top Gun: Maverick — Top Gun (1986) | Top Gun: Maverick (2022)
You will disappoint yourself profoundly at times and must forgive yourself.
Find where you belong — and stay there.
  3. The Godfather I & II — Part I (1972) | Part II (1974)
You think you will choose your life, but life often chooses you.
There is a reason the Lord’s Prayer asks us to forgive those who trespass against us.
  4. Ferris Bueller’s Day Off — IMDb
Life moves fast — make sure you take time to smell the roses.
  5. The Hangover — IMDb
    Stick by your friends.
  6. Chariots of Fire — IMDb
Find your motivation — and excel.
  7. The Mission — IMDb
Injustice is part of the human condition. Learn to live with that truth without becoming embittered.
  8. The Rocky Trilogy — Rocky (1976) | Rocky II (1979) | Rocky III (1982)
It’s easy not to maximize your potential.
Find the reasons to maximize it — the greatest triumph is overcoming failure.
  9. The Outlaw Josey Wales — IMDb
You can choose to hate and fight, or you can choose to forgive and love.
  10. Diva — IMDb
We all have special gifts — some more special than others. Share them with the world.
